Design and Inspiration
Based on the 1962 World Fair’s theme “The Age of Space,” this Seattle landmark was given a futuristic design to represent the city’s innovative spirit. The iconic tower went through many early sketches, resembling a flying saucer, a tied-down balloon, and a broadcast tower restaurant.
With a center of gravity just five feet above the ground, the Space Needle was built in 1961 and opened for the World Fair the following year, accepting 2.6 million visitors during the event. Our historic hotel rooms are the perfect complement to your tour of Seattle history.
